Episode 195: The Next Conversation that Changes Everything

Ever wish you could rewind a tough conversation?
No need to, simply be ready for The Next Conversation.

Let’s explore Jefferson Fisher’s powerful book together…

Hey y’all, welcome to Lovin My Daughter-in-law podcast where connection, love, and a whole lot of fun come together.

I am LeAnn Austin, boy mom and teacher turned master certified life coach, who once had all the feelings when cute girlies started dating my sons. I had to learn a lot about love, boundaries and connection, not just with my daughters-in-law, but with myself. That’s how Lovin My Daughter-in-law was born.

So if you’re craving more love, connection, and fun in your life, especially the kind that starts from within, this podcast is for you.

Today’s episode #195: The Next Conversation That Changes Everything

Have you ever regretted what you said or didn’t say during a tough conversation? Most of us do. In today’s episode, we’re uncovering why the next conversation matters more than the first.

Jefferson Fisher’s book, The Next Conversation, reminds us that it’s not the argument, but what happens after that shapes relationships. The Next Conversation is where trust is rebuilt, understanding happens, and real growth begins. It’s about choosing connection over control, and curiosity over conflict.

Picture this: someone says something snarky to you. Maybe your coworker, maybe your teenager, maybe your daughter-in-law.

Your insides flare up, your words are ready to fly, and you wanna snap back. But Fisher says, pause. Take a breath, because your peace of mind is worth more than that one comeback.

Okay, so let’s make it real. Imagine you’re at work and you get a passive aggressive email. Instead of firing one back, you pause and reply with curiosity: “That sounded a little rushed. Wanna talk it through?” Boom, no fire added to the flame.

Or you’re at home and maybe your spouse snaps at you after a long day. Instead of matching that energy, you pause and ask: “What’s going on underneath that?” Now you’re unraveling the knot instead of yanking it tighter.

With family dynamics or any conversation like in-laws, kids, parents, friends, whatever – this one shift changes the whole vibe.

So LeAnn, why does this even matter? Well, Fisher isn’t just saying be nicer. He’s saying we can retrain the way we talk, so our relationships actually grow through conversations instead of breaking down.

And y’all know me, I am all about creating more love, fun, and connection. Whether that’s with your people or with yourself.

So here’s my challenge for you this week:

In your very next conversation, whether it’s with your boss, your best friend, or a family member, try this… pause before you talk and think, not now. Because you can’t unsay something, but you can always reshape what comes next.

Then just notice what happens. Message me ~ I’d love to hear how it goes.

Alright, that’s it for today. And if you want more conversations like this – where we unpack simple ways to bring peace, clarity, and connection into your life – come hang out with me in Connection Crew.
