Hey y’all, welcome to Lovin My Daughter-in-law, episode #185: Left-Handed, Right-Minded

Today is one of those quirky little holidays you might not even know existed, but definitely we’re celebrating. It’s Left-Handers Day!

That’s right, a whole day dedicated to the wonderful smudge, fingered, slightly backwards scissor using people among us, which includes my amazing husband and one of my cute sons too.

Now this episode isn’t just about lefties, it’s about the things that make us different. The little quirks, habits and personality traits that make life interesting and meaningful. So whether you’re a lefty, a righty, or ambidextrous. Get comfy and let’s celebrate the beauty of being a little bit different together.

Where does the fun little phrase left-handed, right-minded, even come from. Well, here’s the simple sciencey explanation behind it. In most people, the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, and the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. So in left-handed folks, their right brain is often more dominant when it comes to motor control.

Now the fun part of that is that the right side of the brain is traditionally associated with creativity, intuition, emotional expression, and big picture thinking while the left side is more analytical and logical.

So while it’s a playful, not a hundred percent scientifically literal phrase, when people say left-handed, right-minded, they’re leaning into the old idea that lefties might be extra creative, intuitive, or free spirited because their right brain gets a little more action.

But it’s worth noting, brain science has found that both sides of the brain are super interconnected and that whatever hand you use doesn’t strictly dictate creativity or logic. It’s a fun stereotype with a little science behind it, and a great reminder that we’re all beautifully wired in our own ways.

So a few facts about lefties. Only 10 to 12% of people are left-handed, making it a pretty exclusive club.

Lefties often have to adapt from using scissors to writing in notebooks. A lot of everyday tools are made for right handed people, which makes lefties low key resilient pros.

Left-handed people tend to excel at sports involving reaction time, and spatial awareness – like tennis, baseball, fencing, and boxing.

Studies have shown lefties may be more likely to think outside the box, possibly because they’re used to navigating a right-handed world in their own way.

My big takeaway from Lefty Day is that we all have quirks, differences and things that set us apart, and these really are our greatest gifts.

Remember to embrace what makes you, you. Whether it’s being a lefty, dry humor, keeping the eggs even in the egg carton or whatever is unique to beautiful you.

Your challenge for today is to try to something with your non-dominant hand. Brush your teeth, write your name, or open a door. Notice how awkward it feels at first – and remember, that’s what it’s like when you step outside your comfort zone. It might feel clumsy, but it grows you.

I love this quote from C.R. Manske: “Life without left-handed people wouldn’t be right.” Hmm, something to think about.

Thanks for hanging out with me today for this lighthearted little celebration of left-handers day, and the wonderful weirdness in all of us.

I hope it reminded you that the things that make you unique, the quirks, the habits, the left-handed scissor struggles, are often the best parts about you.
