Hey y’all, welcome to Lovin My Daughter-in-law, episode #178: Confidence is a Muscle & Here’s How to Flex It
Today I want to give you a quick confidence boost and leave you with one little idea that might change how you think about yourself.
Here it is: confidence is a muscle.
Not a magic trait. Not something you’re either born with or without. It’s something you build, and just like any other muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets.
I used to think confident people were born that way, that they just had it, that they woke up every day, looked in the mirror and were like, yeah, I’m amazing. Let’s do this.
Spoiler alert: no one feels like that all the time.
Most of the confident people we admire, they build that muscle by doing things that scared them. Things that made their stomach cringe and their voice shake. Things that stretch them, and then they survived it, and then they did it again. And that’s how the muscle grows.
So if you’ve been waiting to feel confident before you do something brave, this is your gentle nudge to flip the script. Because confidence doesn’t come before the thing, it comes from doing the thing. You don’t lift a heavy weight when you’ve never picked up a dumbbell before. You start small, you build strength and you do the same with confidence.
A few years back, someone asked me to be on their podcast and my first thought was: Me? Why me? I don’t know how to do podcasts. I almost said no. I could feel my stomach drop and my brain was just spinning on all the reasons why I wasn’t ready. I wasn’t qualified, I wasn’t enough, but thankfully something in me, this tiny little brave voice whispered. Just say yes and you’ll figure it out.
So I did, and let me tell you, I was so scared. I felt like I was gonna throw up the whole time I stumbled over my words, my voice shook a little, and at one point I forgot what I was going to say next. And you know what happened? Nobody cared. They didn’t care about my shaky voice. They cared about my heart. They cared that I showed up.
That confidence that I created helped me start my own podcast over three years ago, and now I enjoy being guests on other people’s podcasts. I certainly wasn’t feeling this that first day, and I still get a little nervous at times, but I was reminded in that moment.
Confidence isn’t something you magically wake up with one day. It is something you build by doing the scary thing, proving to yourself you’ll survive it and then doing it again just like a muscle. The more you flex it, the stronger it gets.
So here’s how you flex that confident muscle today. Pick one thing, just one thing that makes you a little nervous. Maybe you’ve been avoiding or overthinking something, like introducing yourself to someone new or speaking up in a meeting. Maybe you are worried about posting a video that you’ve been editing for weeks or saying no to something that just doesn’t feel right to you. Whatever it is, do it even if it’s messy, even if your hands shake.
And then when you’ve done it, say to yourself, look at me kickin tail hiney. I did the thing. That’s a rep. That’s a muscle flex. And tomorrow I’ll be a little stronger.
Now if you do it, and I hope you do, message me on Instagram or email me and tell me what was your brave move. I’ll be right there cheering you on.
