Hey y’all, welcome to Lovin My Daughter-in-law, episode #174: Ink About It

Today we’re diving into something that’s way more powerful than it looks. It’s not a fancy planner. It’s not your phone notes. It’s your journal.

Yep–we’re talking about the magic, the messiness, and the surprising mental health superpower that is journaling.

Whether you’re a daily scribbler or haven’t touched a notebook since high school, this episode is for you.

Turns out, journaling is actually one of the simplest, most powerful tools for clearing your mind, healing your heart, and remembering who you are.

Here are seven short reasons while journaling matters.

Spoiler. You don’t have to be deep poetic or even consistent for it to change your life. So grab a pen or don’t, and let’s get into it.

Why journaling matters. First, it declutters your brain. Ever feel like your brain has 47 tabs open and you can’t find the music playing? Journaling is like clicking the little X on those mental tabs-one thought at a time.

We carry so much in our heads; thoughts, to-dos, worries, ideas, conversations we had three days ago… Journaling gives those thoughts a place to land so your brain doesn’t have to juggle them all at once. Think of it like hitting save on your inner hard drive.

Second, journaling helps you feel your feelings. Sometimes I don’t even know what I’m feeling until I write it down. Then it’s like, oh, that’s what’s under the frustration. Our emotions want to be seen. Journaling lets you say, I see you without judgment.

Writing things out makes your emotions real seen and safe to explore. You don’t have to quote, “fix your feelings”. Just let them have a voice. Name it to tame it. Isn’t just a catchy phrase, it’s brain science.

Third, you start to see patterns and growth. When I flip back through my journal and realize I’ve stopped writing about something that once consume me, that’s growth I wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.

It’s like catching yourself mid bloom. Journaling over time shows you what keeps coming up, what you’ve outgrown, what lights you up, and that awareness, it is priceless for growth.

Fourth, journaling regulates your nervous system. There are days I journal for just three minutes, and I literally feel my shoulders drop. It gets me out of my head and back into my body. Even doodling or scribbling really helps regulate my stress.

When life feels big or heavy, journaling can help you too. It slows your breathing, calms your thoughts, and shifts your focus inward in a healing way. Even five minutes of writing can move your body from fight or flight into rest and restore.

Fifth, no writing skills required to journal. If you can send a text or scribble on a sticky note, you can journal. There’s no rule book. It doesn’t have to be deep. It just needs to be you.

Journaling doesn’t need to be poetic, perfect, or even full sentences. It can be bullet points, doodles, a gratitude list, one sentence, whatever helps you connect with you. If you can text a friend, you can journal.

Sixth, journaling helps you slow down. Journaling is like hitting pause when life keeps fast forwarding. It’s one of the few moments that’s completely yours. In a fast scrolling, multitasking world, journaling is a sacred pause. It gives you time to check in instead of checkout.

And last, journaling is a record of who you are becoming. Your journal becomes proof that you are growing. Even on the days you can’t feel it, you’ll look back and see strength in the scribbles.

Your journal captures growth, healing, heartbreak, and joy. Looking back, you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come, even when you didn’t notice it in the moment.
