Hey y’all, welcome to Lovin My Daughter-in-law, episode #158: February’s Charm: Short & Sweet
February is the shortest month of the year. Ever thought about the perks of keeping things short? Let’s toss in sweet too. It’s Valentine’s season after all.
What does short and sweet mean to you? For me, if something drags on, my mind starts to wander. But when things are short, simple and to the point they really stick with me.
That’s why I keep this podcast short. If I can’t give you something fun and connecting in just a few minutes, why would you bother listening?
Let’s be real. Most of us don’t have time for long, drawn out stuff. Length doesn’t always equal boring, but short is often better.
Here are three benefits of short:
First, time efficiency. Short fits into busy schedules. Imagine someone saying, “Let’s catch up for an hour over lunch,” versus “I’m free all day – let’s hang out.” Which one sounds more doable when you’ve got a packed day? Short and sweet wins when time is tight.
Think about TV shows. Sometimes a 20 minute sitcom is all you need for a quick laugh, while committing to a two hour movie might feel a little overwhelming. Short episodes let you sneak in entertainment without eating up your evening.
The second benefit of short is better retention. Concise messages stick. I recently sat through a long talk, and by the end, I couldn’t recall a thing. But a short, punchy message? That stays with you. Less really is more when it comes to remembering.
Ever notice how catchy slogans stay in your head? Dream big, or You got this! are so short, yet they’re unforgettable. Compare that to long mission statements that nobody remembers.
What’s a short, catchy phrase that pops into your mind? I’d love to hear it. Message me anytime or share yours on my social.
And the last benefit of short is consistency. Short tasks are easier to maintain. Want to start exercising? Committing to 15 minutes a day feels manageable compared to an hour. Starting small helps build habits, and before you know it, you’re doing more without even realizing it.
Or take reading, for instance. Telling yourself you’ll read one chapter a day is way more approachable than deciding to finish a whole book in one sitting. Small chunks make it easier to stay consistent and actually finish the book.
So there you have it. The three perks of keeping it short and sweet: time, memory, and consistency.
How can you make your life a little more short and sweet today?
I love this quote from Thomas Jefferson, “The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do.” Hmm, something to think about.
