Hey y’all, you’re listening to Lovin My Daughter-in-law, episode #145: Life’s Curves and Swerves

Does life throw you curves and swerves? I’m guessing the answer is yes and probably more than you’d like.

Part of being a human is the unexpected challenges and changes that happen as we go through life.

Think about when you’re driving and all of a sudden there’s a sharp curve or swerve on the road. Life too, can take sudden, unpredictable turns.

Moments like these might disrupt your plans or force you to adapt. And they also offer opportunities for growth, learning, and resilience.

So, when we’re talking about life’s curves and swerves, let’s break this down a little bit. Life’s curves refer to unexpected obstacles or detours that make you change direction. For example, a job loss, relationship changes or health issues.

Life’s swerves are the adjustments or quick decisions you make to navigate these challenges. For example, finding a new path, changing your mindset, or discovering new strengths.

Here are three key things that I think really help us with life’s curves and swerves:

First: Be flexible, meaning be able to adapt when things don’t go as planned. Life will always have unexpected turns, and being flexible is a game changer. For example, if a friend cancels plans last minute, instead of being upset, you can use that time to do something else you enjoy or need to get done.

Second: Learn from the Curves. Every unexpected event is an opportunity to learn something new about you or your life. These experiences make you stronger and more adaptable in the future. For example, think about the last time that you quote “failed” at something. Learn from this curve and think of it as an opportunity to discover what didn’t work, and try again with a different approach.

I talk about this more in podcast #133: Rejection is Redirection. Take a listen if you want to hear more about redirection and learning from the curves HERE

And then, the third key thing that helps with life’s curves and swerves is make the curve as fun as possible. I know that when things don’t go the way we want, that does not seem fun at all. But what if you could turn life’s surprises into a game or sport where you don’t know what the next move will be, but you prepare yourself to react in a positive way.

Think about life as a basketball game. Sometimes the ball goes one way, and you have to move quickly to catch it. You won’t always know what’s coming, but you can choose how to react.

So, whenever life throws you a curve and swerve, remember these three things. Be flexible. Learn from the curve. And make things as fun as possible.

Sadie Christman shared this quote: “Life throws you curveballs, but you either learn to swerve them or hit them like there’s no tomorrow.” Hmm, something to think about.

Here’s to curves and swerves, connection and love. Have a good one, y’all.
