Hey y’all, welcome to Lovin My Daughter-in-law, episode #166: The Power of Children’s Books
Today, April 2nd is International Children’s Book Day. Children’s books have a special way of staying with us long after childhood. They teach kindness, bravery, resilience, love, and so much more–all through simple stories that speak straight to the heart.
Think back to your childhood. Was there a book that made you feel something deeply? Maybe it sparked your imagination, made you laugh, or taught you an important lesson. That’s the power of children’s books.
Why do children’s books have such a lasting impact?
Well, books are more than just words on a page. They shape the way children see the world, understand emotions, and connect with others. Here are three powerful reasons why children’s books leave a lasting impact.
First, they teach timeless values. Children’s books often introduce big life lessons in simple, relatable ways. Whether it’s The Giving Tree, teaching generosity and selflessness, The Velveteen Rabbit, showing the beauty of love and authenticity, or Wonder, engaging kindness and acceptance. These stories shape our core values from an early age. Through engaging characteristics and heartfelt messages, children learn lessons that stick with them long into adulthood.
Second, children’s books build emotional connection. Reading together is more than just an activity, it’s a bonding experience. Whether a child is snuggled up next to a parent, listening to a teacher in a classroom, or even reading solo and relating to a character, books create a sense of connection. Sharing stories improves communication, strengthens relationships, and helps children feel safe and understood. When a child sees their own emotions reflected in a book, it reassures them that their feelings are valid and normal.
And last, they spark creativity and curiosity. Books transport kids to magical worlds, introduce them to different cultures, and open their minds to endless possibilities. A single book can inspire a lifelong passion, whether it’s a love for adventure, science, storytelling, or dreaming big. Imaginative stories like Alice in Wonderland or Where the Wild Things Are encourage kids to think outside the box. Ask questions and see the world with wonder and excitement.
So, if you want to celebrate International Children’s Book Day, here are three fun ways:
First, read a story with a child. Set aside 10 to 15 minutes to read aloud with a child, a grandchild, or even by yourself. Children’s books have profound messages for all ages.
Second, reflect on a book that shaped you. What’s a children’s book that made a lasting impact on your life? Why did it stick with you? Share your favorite book with a child and tell them why it’s special to you. Stories create connections across generations.
And third, give the gift of a book. Donate a favorite children’s book to a local school, library, or family member. Books are treasures that can change lives. You could even write a heartfelt message inside, so the recipient knows why this book is special to you.
Share with someone you care about. What was your favorite children’s book growing up? What lesson did it teach you? Let’s celebrate the power of stories.
One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Seuss book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” Hmm, something to think about.
Here’s to children’s books, connection, and love. Have a good one, y’all.
