You’re listening to Lovin My Daughter-in-law, episode #98: Rose, Thorn & Bud
We started a thing in our family a while back where my kids, my husband and I, have a text thread going and every week we share our highs and lows. What went well for the week and what didn’t. It’s a fun way to catch up and share our happenings with each other.
I’ve also been blessed to work with the youth at my church and we do highs and lows there too. I love hearing what their highs are as well as what they’re frustrated by or struggling with. I think it brings a closeness to our class as we know more about what is really going on in each other’s lives.
Well recently I was out on a run with my dear friend Liz and she started talking about a rose, thorn, and bud. She shared what was going well, her rose or her high. Then, something that was a low for her, she called a thorn. And my favorite part was her sharing something she was working on, a bud. That little piece of growth or goal that’s just starting to develop.
A rose, a thorn, and a bud. What a beautiful way to share what’s happening in our world with others, as well as what we’re growing at this moment in our lives.
As we’re wrapping up 2023, think about the roses that you’ve experienced. What thorns have come up along your path? And lastly, what buds have emerged for you this past year? Those new little buds, how do you want to grow them moving forward?
If you’d like, try this activity with your family or friends. It’s such a beautiful way to create more connection with those you care about. Explore the three words. First, ask about their roses: meaning the positive aspects of their day or week. Then, have them share about their thorns: the challenges or difficulties they’re experiencing. And finally, number three, ask about their buds: any opportunities for growth or new developments. Alphonse Karr shares, “We can complain because rosebushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorns have roses.” Hmm, something to think about.
Have a good one y’all, and here’s to roses, thorns, buds, and love.
