Hey y’all, you’re listening to Lovin My Daughter-in-law, Episode #81: For The Halibut
I recently returned from an Alaskan cruise with 26 of my family members. I have some pretty amazing parents that gifted us all with this incredible experience. And for those of you contemplating an Alaskan cruise, I highly recommend it.
One of the excursions we decided to do was deep sea fishing for halibut. I was blessed to be on a boat with my husband, two married sons, and two daughters-in-law. None of us had ever deep sea fished before. We got on the boat with an awesome girl captain and a super helpful deckhand, who taught us and helped us all catch our first halibuts.
We got the bonus of having a dog named Boone along for the ride. He would bark every time he smelt marine life, which notified us when to look for whales. So we also got to see some whales.
Now doing a fishing activity just for the halibut, strengthens relationships in so many ways. The six of us now have the shared experience of catching our first halibut together. We cheered each other on as each of us reeled in our fish. And when you’re reeling in 300 plus feet of fishing line, it takes a good three to four minutes. We measured the fish and celebrated together this unique opportunity.
Another way this strengthened our relationships was the uninterrupted quality time. We were away from the daily distractions of life, on a boat, in the beautiful ocean, having conversations, laughing, and creating memories.
Fishing for halibut can be physically demanding and mentally challenging. The fish we caught were between 25 and 30 inches long. They’re heavy and wiggly as you’re reeling them in. We had a few that we had to decide very quickly whether to keep or throw back and try again. We got to rely on each other for support and encouragement while doing this.
We also learned something new. Deep sea fishing requires learning new skills and techniques about the ocean and marine life. Acquiring this knowledge together, promoted a sense of accomplishment for us all.
I’m so grateful for this experience with my daughters-in-law and the rest of my family. I challenge you and myself, to look for opportunities to spend time together with people you love and care about, or simply those you want to understand and get to know better. Whether it be fishing or any activity, just for the halibut.
I love this quote from Harry Middleton: “Fishing is not an escape from life, but often a deeper immersion into it.” Hmm, something to think about.
Have a good one y’all, and here’s to fishing, relationships, and love.
