Today’s episode #209: The Movie My Sons Brought Back

Two of my sons at different times recently, reminded me of a movie that I haven’t thought about in years ~ Facing The Giants.

I figured since they both had mentioned some impactful things about it, it was time for me to watch it again.

Isn’t it funny how sometimes our kids end up teaching us the lesson we know, but we forget about?

My youngest son brought up the scene with the death crawl and even showed me the short video clip of it. You know, the one that makes you sit up a little straighter and go, Okay Lord, I hear you.

Well, I’m so glad my cute boys reminded me of this show and that I watched it. There are so many beautiful insights and tender moments throughout the movie.

Now Facing The Giants isn’t really about football. It’s about facing fear instead of avoiding it, showing up when you don’t feel qualified, giving God your effort instead of demanding outcomes, and learning that success isn’t the scoreboard. It’s about doing the crawl even when you can’t see the finish line.

So let’s talk again about that famous scene, the death crawl moment. So the eyes are covered, weight is added, and the coach is saying: Give me your best, over and over again.

And what was so cool, the player had more strength than he realized. He just didn’t know it yet.

Isn’t that life? We stop short because we think we’ve reached our limit, when really we just reached our comfort zone.

My sons weren’t talking about football when they reminded me of the movie, they were talking about effort, consistency, and faith.

And I realized they were reminding me to… stop quitting early, to stop underestimating what steady effort can do, and to stop asking for certainty before taking the next step.

Sometimes our kids see our giants clearer than we do.

So how do we face our own giants today? Our giants could look like self-doubt, burnout, fear of failure, comparison, trying again when it didn’t work the first time.

And just like in the movie. The question isn’t will I win? It’s, will I give my best where I am today?

The beauty of Facing The Giants is this: when we surrender the outcome, we gain peace. When we show up with effort, growth happens. And when we trust God with the results, confidence follows.

And sometimes all we need is our kids saying, Hey mom, remember this?

So ask yourself these three questions often, and they may be a great conversation to have with your family as well.

What’s a giant you are facing right now?

Where might you be stronger than you think?

And what does giving your best look like today? Not perfect. Just present.

You’ll be surprised at what comes up.

So today, whether your giant feels big or small, take the step, do the crawl, give your best. And remember, you’re probably stronger than you realize. Hmm, something to think about.
